The Bicycle Alliance of Washington is involved in several ongoing programs that
promote bicycling for transportation.
Bike Buddy Program
The
Bike Buddy Program matches experienced bicycle commuters with
those looking for tips and guidance in learning how to use their bicycle for transportation.
Safe Routes to School Program
Feet First and the
Bicycle Alliance of Washington are working together to make walking and
biking to school safe, practical, and fun. A 2006 Transportation Enhancements grant from the
Washington State Department of Transportation enabled us to form the
Center for Safe Routes to School in Washington State.
The grant has allowed us to significantly expand our existing program and create a web site.
Since forming the Center, we held the first ever state wide Safe Routes to School Summit in Lynnwood and a second in
Spokane. We assisted numerous schools and organizations prepare grant applications, projects and programs,
participated in over 24 trainings, and gave many presentations.
We also established and facilitated a state wide coordinating committee.
Complete Streets
The streets of our cities and towns ought to be for everyone, whether young or old, motorist or
bicyclist, walker or wheelchair user, bus rider or shopkeeper.
"COMPLETE STREETS" are designed and operated to enable safe access for all users. Pedestrians,
bicyclists, motorists and bus riders of all ages and abilities are able to safely move along and
across a complete street.
Trails
In addition to improving conditions for bicyclists that use the streets, the Bicycle Alliance
is also involved in efforts to build, improve, and maintain bike trails.

Legislation
Making Washington State more bike-friendly often necessitates new laws or modifications to
existing laws.
Legislative Activities:
- The Legislative Steering Committee
acts in an advisory capacity to the Board in establishing a legislative and statewide advocacy agenda.
- 2009 Transportation Advocacy Day Set for February 24. Save the Date!
Once again the Bicycle Alliance is working with Transportation Choices Coalition, the Sierra Club,
and other transportation-related organizations to hold Transportation Advocacy Day in Olympia.
The February 24 event will provide a great opportunity to learn the issues, meet with your legislators,
and network with other advocates. Check back after the first of the year for more details. Hope to see you there!
- This year's (Fall 2008) Legislative Priorities
Recent legislation:
- The new federal transportation bill, SAFETEA-LU, provides more funding for bicycling
and walking than ever before! Read about the details at:
www.americabikes.org
- Thanks to the tireless efforts of
advocates all across Washington, three bills passed the 2005 legislature that will help make
bicycling safer for all users. Read all about it: Three Bike Bills for Washington
