Go By Bike

Go By Bike Background
Go By Bike is a bicycling safety education program run by Bicycle Alliance of Washington in collaboration with Olympic College, Pierce College, Bellevue College and North Seattle Community College. The program is funded by a grant from the Federal Highway Administration, locally administered by the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Gain College Credit
Program Manager Joshua Miller, PhD, has established a 1-credit Physical Education course at each of the colleges with the support of administrators, staff and faculty liaisons and co-instructors. Miller has also trained his co-instructors and he co-teaches the Go By Bike courses at all four colleges. The program has loaner bikes and helmets available to students who do not have bikes or whose bikes are in disrepair.

In Spring Quarter 2012 Miller and his co-instructors taught the course at Pierce and Olympic colleges. In Summer and Fall quarters of 2012 all four colleges offered the course. The course is being offered through Spring or Summer 2013 at all four colleges.

Tailored to Student Experience
Miller is an enthusiastic teacher and strives to tailor the course to student experience, interests, and abilities. In addition to a lifelong passion for bicycling and working on bikes, Miller had earlier careers in the bicycle industry and in urban planning and has completed master’s and PhD research on bicycling. Most recently he was certified by the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) as a League Certified Instructor (LCI).
